The
Galt
Canoe Club
was founded some time before 1884 and was
known originally as the Galt Collegiate
Institute Canoe Club. According to the American Canoeist
magazine (June 1884), the GCICC "recently changed its
name to the Ubique
Canoe Club." This would explain why
William McKendrick is associated with Ubique in some ACA
records. Ubique is also indicated to have been founded 1880
which is likely the found of the original GCICC. John McKendrick
became ACA Commodore and Harry McKendrick won many titles
during his racing years. Galt hosted a regatta in 1890,
attended by reporter and budding writer Pauline Johnson
of the Brantford Canoe Club who
was very impressed by the event. Charting the club's name
changes is a bit tricky. Sail & Paddle magazine claims
the Galt Canoe Club was founded in 1886, which would simply
be another name change from Ubique. The American Canoeist
refers to it as the Galt Canoe &
Boating Club. They paddled on the Grand River behind
a dam that backed the river up about 2.5 miles. H.S. Howell
was commodore in 1886. |
