The
Hudson
Yacht Club began as early
as 1896 as the Hudson Heights
Boating Club, located off Main St. just west
of the current location. The HHBC was a member of the
American Canoe Association and held its first regatta
on August 8th, 1896. By 1906, a group of sailors led
by F. W. Wallace split from the club and formed the
Hudson Boating Club. It
was located on a small piece of land just east of the
government pier. The two clubs co-existed for a short
time and then merged in 1909, a new, larger clubhouse
being built in 1910. They raced in the Association up
until World War I with a brief stint in 1921-22 (official
CCA entry date is 1920...). The club changed its name
to Hudson-On-The-Lake
Yacht Club in 1911 but was always
listed in programs simply as the Hudson
Yacht Club. The original clubhouse
was destroyed by fire in 1917 and its replacement again
in 1934. In 1948, Howard Radford visited the "Hudson
Heights" club which was seeking entry to the Eastern
Division at the time. If this had happened, Radisson
and Quebec Canoe Clubs were ready to form a new division
with the Hudson club. Hudson has recently rejuvenated
its participation in canoeing and kayaking.
