The
Lorne
Amateur Aquatic Club was founded
possibly in 1871 and if they are the same outfit as The
Lorne Rowing Club, became the dominant 19th
century force on the Halifax Harbour. It faded later in
the century and then reorganized in 1901. Unfortunately
the Lorne clubhouse was destroyed in the blast from the
Halifax Explosion but members reorganised shortly afterward.
They gave out cups and trophies well into the 1920's as
part of the regatta scene that included St.
Mary's Boat Club, the Jubilee
Boating Club and the Northwest
Arm Rowing Club. Lorne was no longer a part
of the scene by the time the Maritime Division came about
with St. Mary's being the lone club on the Halifax side
to continue with canoeing activities. A photo from the
1930s seems to show red bands on black for the jersey.
These may likely have been the club colours.
1906:
“The Halifax Boating Club, the Lorne Aquatic Club
and the North West Arm Rowing Club decided to host a circuit
of five regattas which would count towards a Maritime...
championship. Other clubs, including St. Mary’s,
the North Stars, and Bankers would be invited if available.”
