The
Wallace
Point Canoe Club was active in the
1930s just north of Rice Lake. A founding meeting was called
for July 31, 1930 at the Pavillion and they offered swimming
lesson for local farm boys and a winter hockey team. Their
first regatta was held at Gore's Landing in 1931. A boat
house was built in 1934 and Herb Cardwell, the first president,
handed over the role to William Taylor in 1935. 1940 saw
the purchase of a number of racing canoes from the Peterborough
Yacht (Canoe?) Club and 1941 saw the first time Wallace
Point competed against Western Ontario clubs, at the Dominion
Day Regatta in Toronto. CCA memberships were paid at the
time. The club attempted to rebuild after WWII took many
of its active members but eventually folded and put their
boats in storage. 1947 was the last recorded meeting in
their minute books. |
