INFORMATION |
Brantwood
Beach Canoe Club
began in 1933 on the Rideau River at Brantwood Park,
having been organised by Chick Haddelton and friends, former
Rideau and Ottawa-New Edinburgh paddlers. The club entered
CCA in June, 1935 and hosted the Northern Division regatta
in 1936. By 1938, the club moved down the Rideau canal to
Dow’s Lake but folded a year later due to space restrictions
on the lake. The advent of World War II also contributed
to the club's demise. It is possible that the Brantwood
Beach Canoe Club was an extension of the
Brantwood Beach Aquatic Club which already
existed in the area as early as 1922, giving out silver
spoons to the winners of War Canoe races. The club's entrance
into CCA was announced in the papers as "Brantwood
Beach Aquatic Club." The Brantwood club also hosted
regattas exclusively for Ladies paddling events.
