INFORMATION |
The
Pickering
Rouge Canoe Club began as the West
Rouge Canoe Club, founded in 1958 on
the Rouge River in Scarborough by former Toronto
Sailing & Canoe Club members Peter Connelly,
Donald May and Atis Bredovskis. The club was initially sponsored
by the West Rouge Kiwanis but was unfortunately washed out
by high lake levels in 1973. The current sprint program
operates on the west spit of Pickering’s Frenchman’s
Bay. The club offers dragon boating and camping in addition
to recreational and competitive canoeing. A new clubhouse
and boat storage were completed in 2010 to coincide with
the name change. Club members have been known as the “Rouges.”
NB: Although the original colours were green and white
(as evidenced in the original logo below), the colours listed
in some regatta programs are quite different; 1962: Purple
& Yellow, 1964: Yellow & Green, 1965: Black &
Gold (used in penant). By 1968, the now familiar Red &
Black were established (reminiscent of Toronto's colours). |
