The
first application for the A.A.J.M.A.A.
Canoe Club was brought to the CCA in 1935
by William A. Fry. At the time, it was referred to as the
Belleville Canoe Club, but by
the time of its entry, the acronym had been utilised. It
is unknown what the acronym stands for, possibly a "Junior
Men's Athletic Association." There are also misprints
in newspapers referring to the club as Wajmaa.
Carl Gruber was one of the first noted athletes, placing
in the Northern Division regatta of 1935. It was hoped by
the CCA executive that the Belleville club would spur the
formation of a Central Ontario Division along with clubs
from Peterborough, Trenton, Port Hope and Campbellford.
According to a 1940 directory, the Aajmaa Club
was located on Front Street and was home to the "Royal
Canadian Legion Branch 99 Ladies Auxiliary" during
WWII. The club's association with canoeing was brief, disappearing
from competition after 1937. |
