INFORMATION |
The
Britannia Aquatic Club
was first organised (as the Britannia
Boating and Glee Club) in 1887, became
the Britannia Nautical
Club in 1890, Britannia
Boat-House Club in 1895 and, in 1906,
the Britannia
Boating Club. The club was a founding member
of the CCA in 1900 after noted member Edward R. McNeill
tried unsuccessfully in 1899 to form a distinct Canadian
canoeing body separate from the American Association. Britannia
hosted the championships at Lac Deschênes in 1902,
1908 and 1911, and suffered a major fire in 1918. Britannia
withdrew its CCA membership in 1940, but still operates
today as the Britannia
Yacht Club with a new building and
a lot of pride in their past achievements. Members were
often referred to as "the Brits." |
