The
Port Hope Boating Club
was organized in 1869 and held its first regatta
on August 19th that year. Canoeing was very popular
in the area with crowded wharves and piers for regatta
day. By 1887, canoeing was popular enough to rename
the club as the Port
Hope Canoe Club. They are listed in
the American Canoe Association member club lists from
1886. Utilizing the fast-flowing Ganaraska River, it
is uncertain when the club folded but they had likely
dissolved by the turn of the century, possibly as a
result of harbour reconstruction.
