Rupert and the Mixed Magic

The Magicmaker was the one that stumped me for the longest. I had the first
three written by 1996 and every year I would attempt to finish off the book.
I always wanted to have a melody reminiscent of eastern music and I would try
in vain for many years to come up with something worthwhile. In 2001, I finally
found something I could use. The eastern influence is very mild, mainly consisting
of fourths and fifths, but the ending is a nice touch. I used several semitones and
modulations from major to minor to complete the effect and I'm happy with the result.
See if you can spot the Pink Floyd reference...

The little Chinese girl has found a
fishing rod; little does she know what she has done
The little British bear has lost his
submarine; little does he know it
was never gone
So Rupert goes to see the Conjurer where he can make things disappear

He's turned the rod into a magic wand that everyone will come to fear   Rupert must stay to help the Sorcerer on a saucer full of
secret fun
Out at sea the Toti Wizard waits

Under a dome behind his palace gates   The Sorceror has come to face the test   And weilds the wand of magic at its best

But now the heroes are the prisoners as the Wizard makes
for his escape
With a little wit they break their prison cell and plot to cease the Wizard's flight   The magic carpet fails to fly its path

As the hounds of silence rise to
unleash their wrath
The Sorceror and Rupert soar away   And live to fight their foe another day

With a little skill they brave the raging storm and make it back to
the Mandarin's tower
They tell their story to the Conjurer who seals away
the magic power
So Rupert leaves to find his fishing friend and fills him in on the missing rod

They bait the hook and catch a submarine       Lying still beneath the silent pond...
