The
Aka:we
Canoe Club joined the CCA in 2004 as the
fourth First Nations sprint club, part of an association
initiative to expand First Nations representation. Aka:we
first began in 1999 with the assistance of canoeing great
Bert Oldershaw. The club promotes fun, health and well-being
while keeping the cultural aspect of canoeing alive. “Aka:we”
is a Mohawk word meaning “paddle.” Aka:we
hosts the Pauline Johnson Regatta, named after the popular
Mohawk writer and member of the former Brantford
Canoe Club.
It is interesting to note that a "Mohawk
Aquatic Association" hosted the Western
Divisional trials in 1934 in nearby Caledonia. |
