U16
Formerly MIDGET / U17

The Midget Class was replaced with U17 in 2013 and again with U16 in 2019

NB: When the U17 Age Class was introduced in 2013, it included the same 22 events as the discontinued Midget Class (plus the new Mixed C15). Because the new U16 Age Class contained 8 corresponding events, and because Canoe Kayak Canada continues to record best times for those events in comparison to the former Midget events, I have indicated here that these same events for the U17 Class began recording in 2013. Furthermore, with a new age-class designation of U16 in 2019, best times for events are aligned with the event that continues at the same age level and distance. U17 as a class was discontinued in 2019.

* According to athletes, Midget events (U16) were contested at the national championships prior to 1980 but were raced as exhibition events. This is likely a reference to the National Junior Olympics, otherwise referred to as the Canadian Bantam and Midget Championships.
** New 500m events have been established for the 2022 Championships. Because some of the 1000m events used to be run as 500m, I may separate those distances into their respective event pages where appropriate.
