The
Galt
Canoe Club
was founded some time around 1886. Harry
McKendrick won many titles during his racing years.
Galt hosted a regatta in 1890, attended by reporter
and budding writer Pauline Johnson of the Brantford
Canoe Club who was very impressed by the
event. Charting the club's name changes is a bit tricky.
Sail & Paddle magazine claims the Galt Canoe Club
was founded in 1886, while the Ubique
Canoe Club, centred around Harry's brother William,
took over from the Galt Collegiate Institute Canoe Club.
The American Canoeist refers to it as the Galt
Canoe & Boating Club in 1886 when it describes
the club's burgee. They paddled on the Grand River behind
a dam that backed the river up about 2.5 miles. H.S.
Howell was commodore in 1886. They were still listed
on ACA programs in 1908.
