INFORMATION |
This
club officially formed in 1935 shortly after the Parkdale
Canoe Club changed its name to the
Boulevard Canoe Club.
Former paddlers recall that a splinter group led by Alan
Longstaff left the Boulevard Club, taking up the former
Parkdale name from an old boating shack on the lake shore.
Newspaper regatta results in 1937 indicate that the club
hosted their annual regatta from a new clubhouse on the
Humber River. CCA minutes indicate that the club was originally
called Parkdale Racing
Canoe Club from 1935-37, the
Parkdale Rowing & Canoe Club
in 1938 and finally Parkdale-Swansea
Canoe Club
1939-40, when they managed to win the national championship,
much to the chagrin of the Boulevard club. Parkdale-Swansea
did not regroup after WWII, having officially ceased operations
by the time of the CCA AGM in May of 1941 (stated reason
as "lack of quarters"). The rivalry between Parkdale-Swansea
and Boulevard resulted in the mother club’s legal
blocking of the name ‘Parkdale
Canoe Club’ which the offshoot intended
to use, along with the original club's colours and logo!
Member Bill Bond was elected first rear commodore of the
CCA in 1940. |
