Out on the barren fields of Sorcery Mount, Myrren, Maenus and Lena wandered about, periodically resting to let the idol redirect its arms for them. Along the northern edge of the mount just past the Sword River, the three of them stopped and took in the view over Poroya. The rolling hills glided over the land from the capital in Rostoya right into the Alten Mountains. “They say that centaurs live out there in the glen.” Myrren stated. “Centaurs? Who told you that?” Maenus said. “My father.” Maenus picked up on her curt response. “Would you mind if I asked you about him?” he inquired. Myrren smiled and shook her head. “I don’t mind. I don’t really talk about him much. I haven’t seen him for about eight years. I was still quite young when he left, but capable of taking care of myself.” “What about your mother?” Myrren glanced up at Maenus and hugged herself in the gust of a cold breeze. “She died when I was six.” The prince grimaced and apologised, but Myrren wanted to talk about her. “My mother was a wonderful woman. She had a superior love for life and every creature was her friend, big and small, beautiful and ugly. It didn’t matter.” “How did she die?” Myrren waited a while before answering. “My father killed her.” Maenus reacted in pure shock but Myrren calmed him and explained. “At least I think he killed her. By accident. He was always getting up to no good with his wizardry. I always thought he would give it up after a while, but sometimes he just got carried away.” Maenus considered this. “Is that why you came to the Sorcerer? Because he reminded you of your father?” “I believe it’s why he chose me. I reminded him of his former apprentices. He asked me some questions I shouldn’t really have known unless I had spent time with magic before. It’s my fault he’s dead.” Maenus put his arm around Myrren’s shoulder and reassured her that he never once thought she had killed the man. Myrren used the moment to reveal a bit more about herself to the prince. “That’s my home just over there, in the hills where the road bends.” Maenus squinted to make out the houses that signalled the town entrance. “What’s it called?” "Passage.” “Would you like to go back there one day?” Maenus asked innocently. Myrren turned to face Maenus and her eyes glinted with a gentle light. “I’d love to.”
