INFORMATION |
The
Ottawa
Canoe Club formed in 1883,
was the first recorded club to win the CCA Championship.
In 1885, a floating boathouse was erected near the Chaudiere
Mill at the foot of St. Patrick's street which lasted until
1894. Ottawa's clubhouse at Rockcliffe was then built after
having found the previous premises "inadequate."
The club was a prominent fixture in Ottawa life around the
turn of the century, hosting dances, and joint regattas
with other local clubs. They sought to amalgamate with other
local clubs and eventually merged with the New
Edinburgh Canoe Club (1904) in 1914
to become the Ottawa-New
Edinburgh Canoe Club. This
new club operated out of the original OCC building for nine
years until 1923 when the new building was completed.
