| INFORMATION |
The
Winnipeg
Canoe Club was incorporated June 6,
1893 on the banks of the Red River in Norwood although
it was first linked with the Rowing Club on the north
bank of the Assiniboine where it joins the Red. This
club then moved to the south side of the Red just above
Norwood Bridge. A new clubhouse was built in 1910 along
Jubilee Ave. (land purchased in 1908) but was sold to
CN Railway in 1913. A new building was erected in 1914
not far away off Dunkirk Drive on the east side of the
river. This club was totally destroyed by fire in 1954,
losing about 150 craft, including five C15s. Winnipeg
entered CCA in 1912 after racing in a circuit with clubs
from Fort William, Minneapolis and Duluth. In 1930,
Winnipeg was readmitted to the CCA after some nine years
out of the association. Some time was spent as the Manitoba
Paddling Association from 1949
until 1964, during which (around 1950) there were at
least three clubs in the "association." Winnipeg
was the first western club to both join CCA and win
the championship. Over the years, the club's priorities
changed. Canoeing activities were grouped under the
name Winnipeg Paddling
Club (after paddlers "broke
away from the financially troubled Tennis Club"
in 1983) and then the sprint program relocated entirely
in 2000 under a new name and location: Toba
Canoe Club. The original building
was purchased by a German company which converted the
site into a golf course. The new name became “The
Treffpunkt Winnipeg Canoe Club Golf Course”
and the original structure was torn down in 2007 to
make way for a new retirement complex entitled "The
Canoe Club."
