INFORMATION |
The
Wascana
Racing Canoe Club is a Regina-based competitive
and recreational canoe and kayak club founded in 1986.
With a strong volunteer base, Wascana has achieved much
recognition in Western Canada in its short history. The
current clubhouse was built in 1996 and Wascana Lake underwent
a deepening project in 2003 to increase the lake’s
depth to 18 feet. Wascana is a Cree word meaning “pile
of bones.”
Wascana is loosely connected to the Regina
Canoe Club which existed on Wascana
Lake immediately prior to 1986. A Regina Canoe Club actually
existed prior to WWII and its commodore, Bevan Lawson,
was located by Prairie Flag Office Herb Benthin. Benthin
then called for a meeting to try to get a new Regina Canoe
Club off the ground. Not much happened until 1973 and
then the new club entered CCA the following year. It went
on hiatus for a while and re-entered CCA again in 1984.
The name "Regina Canoe Club" appears on the
National Championships program in 1985 and in 1986. "Wascana"
appears for the first time in 1987. According to former
paddler John Dipple, the Western Canada Summer Games scheduled
for 1975 in Regina kick-started the loose organisation
of a canoeing group. Jim Nickel, formerly of Winnipeg
Canoe Club coached the paddlers but moved to Swift Current
leaving the Regina "club" to dissolve. It picked
up again in time for the 1979 WCSG in Saskatoon when several
synchronised swimmers from the local high school began
paddling. This group raced continuously through the early
80s under Jim Nickel Jr. and organised the first Canada
Day Regatta on Wascana Lake in either 1983 or 1984. The
impetus for the Wascana Racing Canoe Club was likely the
influx of money from SaskFirst with Saskatoon selected
as the host site for 1989 Canada Games. There is no relation
to the Regina Boat Club which
inquired into CCA membership in 1936 and went on to become
the Regina Rowing Club.
During
the 1990s, the Herchmer School Canoe
Club was an associate program of Wascana RCC and
sent various athletes to compete at the North American
Indigenous Games.
