The
Grand Aggregate winners are engraved on the Victoria Yacht
Club Trophy which was in effect from 1925 to 1984 before being
transferred to Juvenile Men's K4. There are three plates on
the trophy that conflict with newspaper reports that very
clearly indicate the 1937 winner as Ottawa-New Edinburgh (not
Gananoque), the 1959 winner as Rideau (not Carleton Place)
and the 1975 winner as Carleton Place (not Rideau). Thankfully
these are the only plates that do not reflect the overall
grand aggregate winner.

The
Ottawa Citizen reports that Rideau has won the divisional
title 10 consecutive years. They probably mean 10 total times
(since their first win in 1923 (1905 not being an official
championship) OR they could be referring to the tenth win
of the Victoria Yacht Club Trophy, introduced in 1925.

The
Ottawa Journal reports the results of these events but seems
to only list first and second place for most of the races.
It is unknown if there were 3rd place finishers simply not
published. Otherwise, New Edinburgh and Britannia tied on
16 points each.

The Ottawa New Edinburgh Canoe
Club managed to throw together an invitational meet by mid-August
which was stated in the Ottawa Journal to stand as the de
facto North Division Championship.

Bay won the Western Ontario Division Championships 3 times
from 1981-1983. That would make 1989 their 4th overall Divisional
title.

The overall champion for the Eastern Ontario Division seems
to have fallen out of practice sometime after the turn of
the century but it is difficult to ascertain when considering
that there are so few documents or articles available. It
is likely that sometime around 2010 points were no longer
tabulated and the focus became solely one of qualifying boats
for the National Championships. Anything after this point
is tabulated purely out of my own interest to see what the
points totals would have been if the practice were still in
place.

Findlay was involved with CPCC from an early age until
his death in September 2010. As a paddler he won Canadian
Championship medals in several events. He developed a
vision that CPCC, despite being a small club, could compete
on a national level. Mr. Findlay was also involved with
CKC for over 20 years, serving as Treasurer and Committee
member, as well as Commodore in 1963. He took on national
team duties during the 1970’s and was Manager of
the 1976 Olympic Team. In 1987 he was appointed Honourary
CCA Commodore and in 1988 he received the R. Edgar Gilbert
Award, the highest honour in the sport. |

Since 1949, R. Patrick "Mike" Scott had been
a Rideau man, a canoe man. It's hard to find his name
in the record books, but there are many a Rideau paddler
who acknowledges Mike as the man who motivated success
at Rideau through the "Scott" years. He worked
hand in hand with that other dedicated Rideau man, Ken
Stroulger, and as Ken relinquished his caring concern
which comes with age, Mike Scott filled the breach. Mike
served as Rideau's Commodore for 15 years when the trophy
was donated. With Mike, anything and everything seems
possible: he chaired eight National Championship regattas
in Ottawa, a driver for the National Team van, national
and provincial Team Manager, even a replacement for a
departed member of the national office staff. He did it
all. In 1985 Mike completed his 25th successive year as
Commodore and thirty-three years on the Board of Directors.
Mike was honoured by his sport with the Edgar Gilbert
Award for Builder in 1985. |

Thom is a Canadian Olympic gold medal-winning shooter.
At the 1984 Summer Olympics, she won a gold medal in the
women's 25 m Pistol event becoming the first Canadian
woman to win a gold medal in the summer Olympics since
1928 and the first Canadian to win a gold medal in the
summer Olympics since 1968. She was selected to carry
Canada's flag at the closing ceremonies. In 1985, she
was made a Member of the Order of Canada. In 1984, she
was awarded the Velma Springstead Trophy, an award presented
annually to Canada's outstanding female athlete, and was
named female amateur athlete of the year by the Sports
Federation of Canada. In 1986, she was inducted into the
City of Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame. In 1992, she was inducted
into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. |

woman to win a gold medal in the summer Olympics since
1928 and the first Canadian to win a gold medal in the
summer Olympics since 1968. She was selected to carry
Canada's flag at the closing ceremonies. In 1985, she
was made a Member of the Order of Canada. In 1984, she
was awarded the Velma Springstead Trophy, an award presented
annually to Canada's outstanding female athlete, and was
named female amateur athlete of the year by the Sports
Federation of Canada. In 1986, she was inducted into the
City of Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame. In 1992, she was inducted

Findlay was involved with CPCC from an early age until
his death in September 2010. As a paddler he won Canadian
Championship medals in several events. He developed a
vision that CPCC, despite being a small club, could compete
on a national level. Mr. Findlay was also involved with
CKC for over 20 years, serving as Treasurer and Committee
member, as well as Commodore in 1963. He took on national
team duties during the 1970’s and was Manager of
the 1976 Olympic Team. In 1987 he was appointed Honourary
CCA Commodore and in 1988 he received the R. Edgar Gilbert
Award, the highest honour in the sport. |
