AMERICAN GAMES |

Canoeing
was a demonstration sport at the 1967 Pan American Games.
In 1978, the Pan American Canoe Racing Council
Championships replaced the annual North American
Canoe Championships. (There had existed a Pan American
Championships in 1975 and the Toronto Pan Am Regatta
in 1976, likely as a result of North American Championships
having been suspended for those years) This event continues
to this day during non-Pan American Games years, however
recording of results has been inconsistent.

the official addition of canoeing in the Pan American Games
in 1987, the Pan American Canoe Championships
do not run during a Games year. Records have been sporadic and,

Canada
did not attend
*At
this juncture, the CCA ceased receiving funding for Pan
American Canoe Championships, the reason given in the 1994
Annual Report as "the PACF has had no significant link
with ICF nor has membership been a pre-requisite for our
participation in the Pan American Games." Canada was
therefore not a member in good standing from 1989-1994.
In 1994, the ICF recognised the PAGF as the new Continental
Federation for the Americas within a new ICF umbrella of
continental federations. ICF approved a new constitution
for the PACF with Winnipeg 1999 seen as the next opportunity
to rejuvenate the Pan American Canoe Championships. See
1999 below. |
