During
the 2023 National Championships there was a tight race for the
burgee between Rideau Canoe Club (reigning champions) and Maskwa
Aquatic Club (previous club champions). Although Maskwa was
announced the winner when burgees were presented, there were
still questions about points allocations that had come up during
the regatta but had not been completely resolved. Discussions
took place afterwards with the DDC of the Sprint Racing Council
and further with the Court of Arbitration for Sport. As a result,
it was decided to award a championship burgee to both clubs
due to those discrepancies.
The
discrepancies appear to revolve around the Paracanoe races.
There were several races which only elicited one entry and according
to the sprint rulebook (to be confirmed) those races were to
be scratched from the race card. The issue with this is that
the establishment of equity and inclusion through Paracanoe
would be disregarded by scratching these races. Because athletes
are classified according to their disability (eg: KL3, KL2,
KL1) they may race together on the water to save time, but their
classifications determine the points and medals they earn.
